Words of Wisdom
Kind Solomon’s Ring
King Solomon was famous for his wisdom. One day he asked his councillors to come up with an inscription for a ring that he could look at to change his mood. He said: ” I want the words to give me perspective and see the truth, to change my mood from sorrow to joy, or fear to peace.”
The Counsillors thought about this for a long time. Eventually they presented the ring to wise kind Solomon with the inscription. And he was much wiser from that day onward.
Before I reveal what the inscription was, I’d like to share another short story with you.
One day as a man was passing some elephants, he noticed that they were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” said the trainer, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?
And now to learn the secret inscription that gave Wise Kind Solomon even more wisdom…
“THIS TOO SHALL PASS”
Everything comes to pass, and there’s always something new just beyond the horizon. The wizest thing you can do is learn to enjoy the sorrow as much as the happiness, because the contrast makes the joy that much more rewarding.
